Dear Parents,

The students in grades 6-8 sang very well Sunday. It was great seeing so many of you there. If your son or daughter was not present to sing, please send a written excuse.
If you have not turned in the permission slip for the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, please do so this week.
This Sunday, October 30th, the church is doing something new for Reformation Sunday. From 3:00 to 6:00 Sunday afternoon there will be displays, skits, and other features for you to see in an effort to help understand what the Reformation was back in the early 1500s. Sixth grade is one of the grades putting together a display for that afternoon. We will finish our project some time this week. Martin Luther is considered one of the most influential men in world history and the Lord used him to bring the pure Word back to the people. It is truly a remarkable story. We hope you are able to stop by for a while this Sunday from 3:00 to 6:00.
Report cards for the First Quarter will be sent home this Friday. Included with the report cards will be a schedule for the Parent/Teacher Conferences you signed up for.

Monday, October 17th

Dear Parents,

First of all, if any of you have been trying to reach me through email, my school computer is not working so I haven’t been able to access my school email. It is in the process of being fixed, but I do not know how long it will be.
This Sunday, October 23rd, grades 6-8 sing in church at the 8:45 service. The students should arrive by 8:30 to practice.
The students continue to work on their Reformation projects for Reformation Sunday on October 30th. Our goal is to have them finished this week.

Monday, October 10^th

Dear Parents,

The big event over the weekend was the Harvest Fest Friday night. It was a fun night for the hundreds of people who showed up including many people from the neighborhood.

This week we begin working on our Reformation Projects for the presentation the church is preparing for October 30^th. We also will continue selecting the two students who will go to this year’s Quiz Bowl.

We welcome a new student to our class this week. His name is Andrew and he attended Apostles up through the second grade. We are glad to have him back. Welcome, Andrew!

Please look over the field trip permission slip that is attached. We are going to the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum on Friday, November 11^th.

The football and volleyball teams continue to play very well and it is great to see so many 6^th graders in the choir.

The entire class signed up for intramurals to play bocce ball, or at least our version of bocce ball. We are starting the playoffs this week. We play during recess.

The weeks are passing so here is a reminder about turning in the Social Studies Fair entry slips. They are due by Wednesday, November 23^rd (the day before Thanksgiving).

The first book report will be assigned this week. The students will present an oral book report to the class on the book they choose. The book must be at least 75 pages and at the student’s reading level. Each student has up to one minute to present the book, its title, author, main characters, plot, and setting. They will begin giving their presentations in about four weeks.

Monday, October 3^rd

Dear Parents,

The class finished testing last week. We will have a normal schedule this week.

Apostles hosted the WELS Volleyball Mixer on Saturday. The weather was great and we saw a lot of great volleyball. Quite a few parents attended. Thanks to everyone who helped out with setting up, taking down, or running the concession stand.

More events are coming up! This Friday at Apostles is our annual Harvest Fest. That has proven to be an enjoyable night for up to 1,000 people. We hope to see you there.

Looking to November, the Northern California Quiz Bowl is Saturday, November 12^th in Redding. Two students from 6^th grade will be selected to participate with students from our other WELS schools in northern California. My goal is to have those two students selected by the end of the week. If your son or daughter qualifies, I will contact you.

Sunday, October 30^th is a big day for Apostles. The church is preparing a number of displays and other projects to celebrate Reformation Day (October 31^st). The students in 6^th grade are going to help out in a project we will start next week. Look for more information about that day in the near future.

On Saturday morning as people were setting up for the Volleyball Mixer the church’s Sonshine Station activity was ending. The church invites young children from the congregation as well as the community to attend Sonshine Station which is held the first Saturday of each month. A number of parents were picking up their children from Sonshine Station. One of them asked me about the application process for Apostles School for her twins. She has sent them to our Vacation Bible School as well as Sonshine Station. Also, I was talking to Mr. Washburn on Saturday and he told me about two more families looking to send their children to Apostles this year even. If you know anyone who is looking for a school like ours, please encourage them to check out Apostles. Mr. Washburn will gladly meet with them and take them on a tour. Mr. Washburn brought a parent to the classroom last Friday on a tour of the school. We have a great school with a great message for everyone.

Monday, September 26^th

Dear Parents,

This is testing week. The students in grades 3-8 take tests in the major academic skills. Some classes will be eliminated to make room for testing.

All of you should have received your child’s progress report last Friday. I will be contacting you this week to see if you have any questions.

Many of the students in 6^th grade are on either the C volleyball team or the flag football team. Both teams are doing very well. Keep up the good work!

Some shoeboxes have made their ways to the classroom. Thanks very much! There is no hurry, but if you have any empty shoeboxes, please feel free to send them.

This is just a reminder that we are collecting the Box Tops for Education pieces again this year. Feel free to send them to the classroom at any time.

Now that we have a few weeks under out belts, I am getting a handle on the class. So far I have very good impressions. The members of the class are very polite and respectful. Also, many of them are asking for help when it is needed. We are working on reducing the number of names that are put on the board for talking, forgetting books, etc., but I think we are heading in the right direction. I would also like to see the number of incompletes reduced. Some of that is due to improving study skills. We put the assignments due the next day on the board at the end of the day. All students take out their assignment books and write them down and then pack up. Those assignments are still on the board the next morning when the students arrive. They are to double check that the assignments have been completed. We have had a number of examples of students not writing down the assignments at the end of the day or checking them in the morning. Just a little bit more care will take care of this.

Our first field trip of the year has been scheduled. We will visit the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum on Friday, November 11^th, at 1:00. A permission form with more information will be sent home in the next week or so.

Monday, September 19^th

Dear Parents,

We had a busy week last week with school pictures, practicing our song for church, and gathering to hear information on Luther Prep. Things should calm down a little this week.

Progress Reports will be sent home on Friday. Also, next week (the 26^th to 30^th) is testing week for grades 3-8. The students will participate in their annual academic testing.

Please note that on Friday school ends at 12:00 due to a faculty collaboration day. The students may be picked up at 12:00 or check into Home Room which begins at 12:15 and runs until 6:00.

Thanks to those who were able to send shoeboxes to the classroom last week. That is greatly appreciated. Please feel free to send any shoeboxes over the next few months.

Last week the school listened to a presentation from Pastor Nate Scharf about Luther Prep. Luther Prep is one of the Wisconsin Synod’s high schools and is located in Watertown, WI. This school has wonderful facilities. High School for your sixth grader is only a few years away. Certainly sending your child away to high school is not a situation for everyone. Mrs. Stubalt and I sent our oldest child to Luther Prep. Two others went to California Lutheran High School down in Temecula. Our fourth child spent two years at CLHS and two years at Santa Teresa High School. Please feel free to speak with either Mrs. Stubalt or myself if you have any questions about your children attending high school away from home.

Monday, September12th

Dear Parents,

School pictures are scheduled for this Wednesday, September 14^th. Information was sent home last week.

Volleyball Mixer permission forms are due this Friday. Last week a note was sent home informing the parents that the starting time of the Mixer has been changed to 12:30. The Mixer is still on October 1^st.

At 1:00 on this Wednesday Pastor Nate Scharf will meet with the students in the church to talk about Luther Prep – one of the high schools run by the Wisconsin Synod.

Other activities going on this week are women’s Bible Study on Wednesday mornings, a new Bible Information Class, as well as The Way.

Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any questions. We are still early in the school year, so just let me know.

If you come across any shoeboxes you do not need over the next few months, feel free to send them to the classroom. We will do a project later in the year with them.

Grades 6-8 sing in the late service this Sunday, September 18^th. The service begins at 11:15. The students should arrive at 11:00 to practice. They will then join their parents in the church before 11:15. When it comes time to sing during the service, the students will walk to the front of the church. After they sing, they will return to their parents.

Monday, August 29^th

Dear Parents,

Each week, usually on Monday, a letter to the parents is sent home. It is also put under the 6^th grade section on the school web site. We try to inform the parents of any tests, quizzes, memory work, etc. that is coming up that week. We do not list all the assignments for each day. Any noteworthy events going on during the week are also noted.

A big Thank You for turning in the kleenex boxes, carton of wipes, and earthquake kits. We are very close to having all of them. Those of you who still need to get them in, if you can get them in this week, that would be great. I can then pack everything away for the year.

Today (Monday) we began math classes. Some of the students stay in 6^th grade math and others went to 7^th grade math. On Sunday I contacted the parents of those students who were going to 7^th grade math with a phone call or email. If I did not contact you, that means your child is in 6^th grade math. Please let me know if you have any questions.

We started Spanish last week. The students were told that it is important that they take the vocabulary lists they receive with each lesson and practice them at home so that they are ready for the test at the end of each unit. We have Spanish on Tuesday, Thursdays, and Fridays.

I was very pleased to see so many students go to choir practice last Wednesday. That is a good sign. I spoke with Mr. Treder and he was expecting maybe 20 students or so total. He got that many just from 6^th grade. He said he had around 40 for choir.

We are currently still waiting on whether a few new students are still planning to come. One is the international student from Vietnam. Right now they are working through some visa problems which might take a couple of weeks. Two other students are still undecided. If all of them do enroll, that would put the class number at 23.

As noted above, the students should start memorizing the Books of the Bible. They must recite all 66 to me each quarter.
